Back to blogging... so, San Francisco, here we are !

Honte à moi de ne pas avoir mis à jour le blog plus tôt... mais chose promise, chose due, voici la suite (et bientôt fin) de notre voyage !
Petit rappel : nous sommes maintenant à Grenoble depuis un mois, Dav a repris une activité « normale » et moi je cherche, un peu comme quand on est arrivé à Boston !

Shame on me, I did not update the blog earlier… but as I promised, here is the blog report from our trip!
Remember: we have now been in Grenoble for one month, Dav started again a “real” activity and I am looking for a job, as when we arrived in Boston!


Il y a donc quasiment 2 mois maintenant (jeudi 10 septembre), nous arrivions à San Francisco… Après s’être posé à l’hôtel dans le quartier de South Market (SOMA), on est parti se balader en direction de la baie, en passant par Union Square, le Financial District, Chinatown et North Beach (Little Italy). Tout ça pour arriver à Fisherman’s Wharf, the place to be pour manger :-)
The Franciscan comblera nos papilles et notre estomac… le crabe (et la lobster quand même !), il n’y a que ça de vrai !

It has been almost 2 months now (Thursday, September 10) since we arrived in San Francisco… After stoping by the hotel in South Market (SOMA), we walked towards the bay, through Union Square, the Financial District, Chinatow and North Beach (Little Italy). And we ended up in Fisherman’s Wharf, the place to be for dinner :-)
The Franciscan delights us… Crab (and lobster...), that’s what it is all about!

Pour rentrer à l’hôtel, on profite du mythique Cable Car et de la gentillesse du gars qui bloque ou débloque le câble à l’arrière pour passer les multiples collines… Sans compter qu’il faut retourner manuellement le cable car au terminus !

To go back to the hotel, we enjoy a ride on the mythical Cable Car… And you have to manually turn the cable car at the end of the track!
Le lendemain (Vendredi 11 septembre), on loue des vélos pour aller pédaler sur le Golden Gate Bridge… La brume finira par se dissiper plus ou moins, par contre le vent ne semble jamais s’arrêter et les vestes sont de rigueur toute la journée !
On longe la baie en passant devant Marina Bd (et ses maisons de luxe !) et le parc Presidio avant de monter (attention, montée raide !!) sur le pont… De l’autre coté, on descend tranquillement se poser à Sausalito, petite ville tranquille et à l’abri du vent (ce qui change tout !). Beaucoup de gens rentrent à SF en ferry mais on remonte sur nos vélos pour profiter une nouvelle fois du pont ! Les voiliers du matin ont fait place aux planches à voile, il faut quand même être courageux pour aller dans l’eau ;-)

The next day (Friday, September 11), we rent two bikes to ride the Golden Gate Bridge… The fog tends to disappear during the day, however the wind seems to never stop and we wear our jackets the whole day!
We bike along the bay and Marina Bd (with its luxury houses!) and Presidio Park before climbing (careful, steep road!) on the bridge… On the other side, we climb down to Sausalito, nice little place protected from the wind. Many people go back to SF with the ferry but we ride our bikes to enjoy the bridge again! The windsurfers now replace the morning sailing boats – although the water is quite cold ;-)

Après avoir rendu les vélos, on retourne sur les « piers » voir les crabes et les lions de mer… Les deux font le bonheur des touristes, mais les crabes attendent d’être mangés alors que les lions de mer sont protégés et viennent se reposer ici ! Notez que le lion de mer défend son territoire parfois à coup de dent !

After we brought back our bikes, we go back on the piers to see the crabs and sea lions… Tourists enjoy both of them, but crabs are here to be eaten whereas sea lions are protected and come to rest here!
On remonte enfin la partie bien raide de Lombard St avant que la nuit ne tombe complètement… Ce doit être un bon challenge d’optimiser ses trajets à vélos d’un point à l’autre de SF !

We finally climb the steep part of Lombard Street (the Crookedest St) before dark… It must be challenging to optimize the bike rides from one point to another in SF!

From Washington to California

Mercredi (9 septembre), on longe la Columbia River et on prend la direction du sud pour la Californie… qui sera aussi notre point le plus à l’ouest du voyage.
Après avoir descendu tout l’Oregon, on entre en Californie et on va rejoindre la route 101. Surprise, lorsqu’on rentre dans l’état il y a un poste de « douane » pour contrôler les fruits, légumes, … qu’on a. Les cerises, par exemple, ça ne passe pas – mais les tomates ou courgettes oui.
On entre ensuite dans Redwood National Park, là où se trouvent les arbres les plus haut (le plus haut est à 379 ft – presque 115 m). Ils sont aussi bien résistants aux feux, aux insectes, aux maladies, … bref, ils sont probablement là depuis bien longtemps aussi !
La route longe également une partie de la cote, malheureusement la brume est arrivée avant nous du coup on ne verra pas grand-chose.

Wednesday (September 9), we drive along the Columbia River and head south to california… which is also going to be the western point of this trip.
After driving down Oregon, we arrive in California to join Road 101. Surprise, when you enter the state there is a “custom” gate to check fruits, vegetables, … Cherry, for example, cannot enter – but tomatoes or zucchinis can.
We then enter in Redwood National Park, where you can find the tallest trees (the highest is 379 ft tall – almost 115 m). They resist to fires, insects, diseases, … and they have probably been here for a long long time!
The road also goes along the coast on some sections; unfortunately, the fog came before us so we cannot see much of it.

Le soir, ce sera notre première « loose camping », on va atterrir dans un camping miteux à Ferndale après avoir raté la bonne sortie d’autoroute :-( On aura droit en prime à la sirène des pompiers vers 1 ou 2h du matin, semble-t-il à cause d’un feu dans une des caravanes ?

The evening is going to be our first « camping loose », we end up in a “rotten” campground in Ferndale, CA, after missing the right highway exit :-( We even have the firemen music around 1 or 2 am, apparently because of a fire in one of the trailers?

Le lendemain (jeudi 10 septembre), direction San Francisco par la 101 et un bout de la route 1 au niveau de Point Reyes National Seashore. Les paysages changent radicalement entre l’intérieur des terres, très sec et chaud, et le bord de mer qui est beaucoup plus vert et frais (logique…).
Après un pique-nique à Stinson Beach, on arrive par le Golden Gate Bridge, le fameux… qui en plus n’est pas complètement dans la brume !

The following day (Thursday September 10), we head to San Francisco via Hway 101 and a part of Rd 1 around Point Reyes National Seashore. The landscape is radically different depending on where you are: on the hills inside it is totally dry and hot whereas it is greener and cooler on the seashore -you could have guessed ;-)
After a lunch break in Stinson Beach, we eventually enter San Francisco via the Golden Gate Bridge…, which is not fully in the fog!

Quick Update

As you may know, we came back to Boston on Sunday night, packed everything, shipped half of it, sold the car, gave back our apartment keys... And will board on the plane in less than 9 hours now... Kind of a weird feeling though... Leaving Boston after a year and a half, we can say this is it, end of a journey!
I will update the last part of the trip in the coming days, I promise, and depending on the mood there will be more - or not ;-)
Anyway, stay tuned for the San Francisco, Yosemite, Death Valley, Zion, Bryce & Arches parts!!

Comme vous le savez probablement, nous sommes rentrés à Boston dimanche soir, on a fini nos valises, shippé la moitié, vendu la voiture, rendu les clés de notre appart... Et on va embarquer dans moins de 9h maintenant... Ca fait quand même bizarre je dois dire... Partir de Boston après un an et demi, on peut dire que c'est la fin d'une aventure!
Je mettrai à jour la dernière partie de notre voyage dans les prochains jours, promis, et ensuite on vera en fonction de l'envie ;-)
En tout cas, San Francisco, Yosemite, Death Valley, Zion, Bryce & Arches sont à venir !!
