Après être passé au Rangers Station prendre la météo et quelques conseils la veille, on prend le chemin de Surprise Lake samedi après midi (22 aout).
On commence à monter au bivouac sous le soleil et il fait encore bien chaud… Ca faisait longtemps qu’on n’avait pas monté autant de poids aussi ;-) Les paysages ressemblent un peu plus aux Alpes mais il n’y a toujours pas de vrai génépi, que du faux !
After going to the Rangers Station to get the weather forecast and some tips the day before, we head to Surprise Lake on Saturday afternoon (August 22).
We start to hike to the bivy place under the sun and it is still quite hot… It has also been a while since we had so much weight ;-) The scenery looks like more to the Alps but there is still no real “génépi”, only fake one! (for those who never tasted génépi, you need to stop by the French Alps to taste it!!)

After going to the Rangers Station to get the weather forecast and some tips the day before, we head to Surprise Lake on Saturday afternoon (August 22).
We start to hike to the bivy place under the sun and it is still quite hot… It has also been a while since we had so much weight ;-) The scenery looks like more to the Alps but there is still no real “génépi”, only fake one! On est tout seul au bivouac au dessus du lac (entre Surprise Lake et Amphitheater Lake en fait) – tout seul avec les ours en fait haha !!
Petit repas face à face, prêt à spotter les ours et on met tout dans la fameuse boite à ours, ça ne rigole pas ici… avant d’aller au lit.
We’re the only ones at the bivy above the lake (between Surprise Lake and Amphitheater Lake actually) – the only ones with the bears in fact haha!!
Dinner facing each other, ready to spot the bear, then we put everything in the famous bear box, you don’t laugh about that here… and then go to bed.
Dimanche matin (23 aout) le temps est plus que gris mais a l’air assez stable, du coup on part pour l’arrête sud de Disappointment Peak, après avoir croisé deux biches et un renard au petit dej – mais toujours pas d’ours !
Sunday morning (August 23) the weather is more grey than anything else but seems to be quite stable, therefore we head to the South Ridge of Disappointment Peak, after seeing 2 deers and a fox during breakfast – but still no bear!
Bien que quelques gouttes de pluie nous font hésiter dans la première longueur, on continue jusqu’au bout, mais on ne poussera pas jusqu’au sommet puisque le rocher est bien mouillé une fois les 7 longueurs terminées… En tout cas la voie était bien jolie et le rocher super sculpté. Dommage que le ciel ne soit pas bleu pour les photos !
Although some rain drops make us hesitate during the first pitch, we keep going up to the end of he route but not to the summit as the rock is pretty wet once the 7 pitches done… Anyway, the route was a cool one and the rock was dam good. It’s a pity that the sun wasn’t blue for the pictures!
Lundi matin (24 aout) le temps ne s’est toujours pas amélioré, comme en témoignent ces quelques photos des Tetons prises depuis Signal Mountain, au dessus du camping…
Monday morning (August 24), the weather is still not that great, as you can see on the pictures from Signal Mountain, just above the campground…
