On top of Half Dome

On Tuesday morning (September 15), we wake up before the sun rises to do one of the best valley hikes, Half Dome (8,836 ft – 2 693 m). The guidebook says it is a long (16-17 miles) and strenuous (1,000 m elevation) hike, strongly recommended on a 2-day trip (12h total) and described as airy.
By leaving at 6am, we should manage to be back before dark…
We’re not the only ones with this idea, there are some other hikkers too – young, elders, groups of various sizes, … we pass several people.
After climbing up Vernal Falls (5,044 ft – 1 538 m) and Nevada Falls (5,907 ft – 1 801 m) on a path carved in the rock, we arrive on a first plateau with the sun warming us up and a beautiful forest.
4-5h after we started, we are at the base o Half Dome and its ladder…

Then we start the ladder climbing, as I did on Ayers Rock in Australia a couple of years earlier… The granite tends to be a bit polished where the ladder is, people hold the cable as much as they can and some are really stressed when they have to share the path with someone in the other direction.
Another solution we had, to avoid the crowd, was to climb Snake Dike (5.7), following a natural passage on the dome. The only issue is that there are really long runouts between the anchors…

Once on the top, the view is amazing… we can enjoy a 360 degree panoramic view on the park, with quite an airy view when we look in certain directions… it’s quite a place to take pictures!
We spend more than an hour on the top to enjoy the view and our lunch – you need to be extra careful with chipmunks, they are everywhere and are not afraid of you at all!
People start to arrive when we start to climb down, there are some traffic jams on the ladder!

And we start the long way down… The sun starts to be quite strong, we’re glad to have left early this morning!
The waterfalls, in the shade this morning, are now bright and sunny, we almost want to go under them for a massage ;-)

Nine hours later, we are back at the car… and the GPS says we only hiked 11 miles! Who stole us the last 5 miles??
