Dimanche (6 septembre), on quitte Smith Rock pour remonter au nord et tenter de nouveau les volcans, la météo annonçant du beau pour les jours à venir. Après 1h de route, c’est la pluie qui nous accueille pour la soirée et une partie de la nuit…
L’idée est d’aller d’abord au Mt Hood (11 249 ft, 3 429 m), et ensuite un peu plus au nord, au Mt Adams.
Lundi matin, au camping du Mt Hood, le réveil est pluvieux et le ciel couvert, mais on va quand même aller à Timberline Lodge (un hôtel – station de ski d’où part la rando) voir ce qu’il en est. La pluie ayant cessé, on commence à monter, sans trop savoir où aller parce qu’on ne voit pas grand-chose et qu’on a trouvé aucun topo décrivant la voie – qui est connue pour être ultra parcourue et facile. En route un gars nous dira approximativement par où passer, mais on ne parlait pas des mêmes arrêtes dans la discussion !
Sunday (September 6), we leave Smith Rock to drive north again and give another try to volcanoes, as the weather forecast seems to be better for the coming days. After 1h driving, we find the rain for the evening and part of the night…
The idea is to go first to Mt Hood and then further north to Mt Adams.
On Monday morning at the Mt Hood campground, we wake up under the rain and the sky is all cloudy, but we still go to Timberline Lodge (a hotel – ski resort where the climb starts) to see how it looks like. The rain being over, we start climbing without knowing exactly where to go as we don’t see much and we didn’t find any guidebook to have a look at the route – known to be over hiked and easy. On the way, a guy tells us where to go, but we weren’t talking about the same ridges during this talk!
Bref, à la 1ère éclaircie, on y voit un peu plus clair et on monte en direction du cratère, en évitant le glacier sur notre droite. L’éclaircie sera de courte durée et le soleil joue à cache-cache avec les nuages, ce qui nous permet de quand même se repérer au fur et à mesure.
Les chutes de neige de la veille donnent une ambiance particulière qui est plutôt sympa… mais au cratère ça se complique un peu pour monter au sommet avec les nuages, du coup on va tranquillement faire demi-tour et suivre les traces du GPS… toujours pas de volcan de coché ;-(
The first time we see the sun, we can see where to go toward the crater, avoiding the glacier on our right. The view was short and the sun is hiding with the clouds, which helps us to see where we go…
The previous snow storm give a special atmosphere, pretty nice… but at the crater it gets more difficult to climb up with the clouds, therefore we are reversing the way and follow the GPS tracks… still no volcano ;-(
Et en descendant, on profite des pistes de ski qui –pour certaines- sont damées (ils arrivent à peu près à skier toute l’année ici !) pour descendre… et ça va vraiment bien !!
On the way down, we take advantage of the ski pist as some of them are still groomed (they manage to ski almost all year round here!) to come down… so easy!!
